- At the research facility VEGAS of the University in Stuttgart I work as a Scientific Assistant on experiments to test the applicability of Zero-Valent Nano-Iron for In-Situ remediation of pollutions in groundwater and I am writing my PhD thesis based on this research.
Currently I am working on a EU funded research project AQUAREHAB of which VITO is the project coordinator.
My personal site at the university's website can be found here
.
Hobby etc.
- I think it's fun to drive and work on old cars, but there is another website for that: www.gaz69.nl. I keep track of the progress on that site (Sorry, it is a site in Dutch).
- Together with a few other young scientists working with nano colloids we initiated a network to discuss ideas and problems regarding nano colloids in the subsurface. I also wrote a small website for our YoungNano network which can be found at www.YoungNano.eu
- I am still a member of the Geology Students Society (not very active at the moment since I live in Germany), I was one of the webmasters of their site (www.uu.nl/ugv). I worked on the site from 2000 till 2005.
- Sometimes I like writing small websites (like my own) but also for my father who is a blacksmith (www.devrijesmidse.nl), for my parents neighbour who has his own car shop: Autoservice Brandt.
- For these websites I have written small administration panels, site generators and photoscripts in Perl. Through which I learned the basics of the Perl language.
For my own website I learned to write in PHP to generate the photoalbums. Later I realized that writing in Perl is much nicer, so I don't do much with PHP anymore, except for the pages and some small tricks in these pages of my website since rewriting the whole site into Perl is a bit too much.
I continued using Perl in my work, combined with Linux BASH programming, SciLab calculations and GNUplot this gives nice and easy scripts to post-process datafiles and generate neat graphs. (some related downloads on the download page)
- A typical Dutch hobby is off coarse Cycling, so this is also one of mine.
I have been cycling abroad most of my summer hollidays in the past 20 years. Some pictures of this can be seen on my Photo pages. During such a summer tour I normaly cycle between 1000 and 3000 km in one to three weeks.
My road cycling was for a while my most time demanding hobby. I started with this in the beginning of 2003 and bought a new bike last summer. I used to cycle every week at least twice a distance of 30 to 60 km.
Because of the forrest and mountain rich area (here they are called hills, but for someone having lived his whole live around sea level these are mountains) around Stuttgart, I have added to my racing bike (A pearly white Fausto Coppi with steel frame) and Randonneur bike (a Giant Expedition ed. 1998, by now fully custum rebuild) a mountain bike (frame builder: Fatmodul, FY01), which I also by now have almost completely renewed. The forrest-rich surroundings of Stuttgart provide excellent playgrounds for mountainbiking.
- I followed a course on metal sculturing a while ago. This by now is starting to become a favorite hobby. The Werkstatthaus has an open workshop every Friday making it possible to further develop this craft.
